When recess arrives, a crisis ensues, for the kids are dressed all wrong for romping. Mary's makeover magic leaves no school subject or space unturned. Her drab-looking (though racially diverse) classmates at Mother Goose Elementary (Little Boy Blue, Georgie Porgie, and Little Bo Peep as well as the unnamed others) certainly appear to have stepped out of eras long gone by. With bows, buttons, scarves, and even a sheep-shaped purse with an attitude, Mary turns heads all over town. The day Mary starts school, she declares to her mom, "I must accessorize." Alive and cracklinga gritty tale wrapped in a page-turner. Julia is a sympathetic character, but Sánchez’s often expository writing keeps her and her struggles at arm’s length. 1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A stunning (America Ferrera) YA novel about a teenager coming to terms with losing her sister and finding herself amid the pressures, expectations, and stereotypes of growing up in a Mexican American home. As the book moves along, Julia’s frustration with the many constraints she lives under-poverty, family expectations, and conditioning that she resents but can’t quite ignore-reaches dangerous levels. Sánchez’s debut novel covers a lot of ground, including Julia’s day-to-day activities in Chicago, her college ambitions, her first boyfriend (who is white and comes from a wealthy neighborhood), her difficult relationship with her overprotective parents, and her search for Olga’s secrets. And when she starts to suspect that Olga might not have been so perfect, she follows every clue. When Olga dies suddenly, Julia is left wishing that they had been closer and grieving what she sees as Olga’s wasted life. Julia, by contrast, argues with her mother, talks back at school, and dreams of becoming a famous writer. Why isn’t 15-year-old Julia Reyes a perfect Mexican daughter in her mother’s eyes? Mostly because of her older sister, Olga, who puts family first, listens to her parents, and dresses conservatively. By the time the reader closes the book, he will know a lot of about what happened, but will be remain just as ignorant about why it all happened. Eventually, the characters in the story will be asking questions that are, ultimately, never actually answered because by the time they learn the answers the people asking the questions are no longer who they were. The opening line of the novel immediately sets the stage for all the ambiguity to come. "I warn you that what you're starting to read is full of loose ends and unanswered questions." Knotted is the story of brothers Jake and Jarret, along with siblings Conor and Lorne. I felt invested all the way through, and I love when that happens! It hooked me from the start and didn't let go till the very last page. I started it in the evening and did not put it down until I finished. OMG Pam Godwin- what have you done to me with this book? This story was unputdownable. If you are worried about something specific, you can always PM me. I will say that this book is riddled with triggers, so be aware of that going in. I'm saying that because if you like dark smut reads, this book will probably do you right. That said, this book was fucking riveting and, while the above issue bothered ME for whatever reason, it definitely won't bother everyone thus, if you are a Godwin fan and/or the blurb interests you, you should absolutely still pick this up - and no, I'm not saying that to kiss ass cause this is an ARC. It didn't sit well with me, it didn't fit the characterization for that character up to that point (in my opinion), and it tainted the book for me from that point on. This is an ARC, so I need to be vague - but I just didn't like the actions of one of the main characters. Sadly, this was just not my favorite Pam Godwin, which sucks, cause it started off really strong for me. Fleeing from her captors, Marietta sees the dashing knight, Anton of Gifford.
